Doughnut Backpack Review

I love being outdoors. Maybe it’s the Swede in me, but if I am given the choice to sit either inside or outside then I will always choose outside – weather permitting of course. And when I am part of the ‘indoor generation’ who spend 90% of their time indoors, I am especially conscious of the need to be outside with nature. For me, a backpack is a lifestyle icon and symbolises this need to be outside and explore. Primarily used for hiking and camping, the backpack has now made its way into the mainstream and has been reinvented again and again.

In my opinion, there are two types of people in this world: backpackers and non-backpackers. I am the former. Although I own many handbags, I always find myself going back to my fail-safe backpack if I have a lot to carry. Years of carrying my school bag on my right shoulder has left me a bit lopsided and looking like I am permanently shoulder-dropping. I love having my hands free and the weight evenly spread across my back.

I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to try out a Doughnut bag and I was given free rein to choose the style I wanted. I opted for the American Vintage Cordura because I was lacking a backpack that was big enough for a weekend away. The American vintage style really appealed to me as my dream trip would be a road trip across the United States in a baby blue VW campervan living the van life.

Doughnut bags is the creation of two students who met at University in Hong Kong, who bonded over their love for travel and preference for functional design. What originally started out as a hobby, designing bags just for fun has grown into a stalwart label with a cult following.

We headed out on a picnic with my backpack stuffed with the usual suspects: baguette, cured meats, hummus, grapes, cheese, olives. First, we strolled around Knole Park in Sevenoaks to find the best picnic spot and then settled down with our picnic rug. It all fitted in perfectly, with plenty of room to spare.

The bag itself is beautifully made and such high quality. The inside of the bag is fully lined with doughnut logo printed fabric and has a water bottle holder, laptop compartment and small zipped pockets. The front of the bag has a large pocket, which is secured with two buckles. I have to admit, my first thought when I used the bag was how annoying it was to have to unbuckle two buckles every time I wanted to access the front pocket. After doing this a few times I realised that the buckles are just for show and you can actually get into the pocket a lot quicker by just removing one end of the buckle via some secret poppers. I should have known better than to underestimate the thought of the design that has gone into the bag!

Whether you are high up in the mountains of the Lake District, or deep underground on your commute, these bags will serve you well, whatever your adventure.

Function is first on the agenda and that’s what I like about these backpacks.
